Lignin is a complex organic polymer found in the cell walls of plants, especially in wood and bark. It provides structural support, rigidity, and resistance to decay. The lignin content significantly impacts the strength, durability, and quality of paper products, making it a crucial component for ensuring wood’s hardness and durability. By monitoring lignin content, producers can maintain consistent quality across batches.
How is lignin content measured?
In production, a convenient PG13.5 12mm diameter immersion probe is connected to a Kemtrak FL007 analyzer. As the pulp flows past the probe, the analyzer assesses the lignin content based on fluorescence. Lignin, rich in polyaromatic content, readily fluoresces, making it easy to detect. The results indicate the relative amount of polyaromatic content in the lignin samples.
